Songs in Motion!

Fingerplay songs are great for development of cognitive, language, memory, and fine motor skills. Songs can be used as a way to teach receptive and imitation skills or as reinforcement.

Helpful Tips:
- When you are teaching a new fingerplay song to your child, say the lines slowly and repeat couple times.
- Demonstrate actions clearly and give your child an opportunity to imitate.
- Explain any unfamiliar words and use pictures
- Encourage imagination by expanding a song or coming up with a new hand movements.

Hands Are Clapping (Contributed by Melinda Gibson from SC)

My 3 year old autistic students love this song. I have used Boardmaker to make a visual of this song. It is so simple and great for gross motor imitation.

Hands are clapping.
Clap, clap, clap.
(Repeat the two lines)
Clap your hands my darling.

Toes are tapping.
Tap, tap, tap.
Tap your toes my darling.

Arms are swinging.
Swing, swing, swing.
Swing your arms my darling.

Eyes are blinking.
Blink, blink, blink.
Blink your eyes my darling.

Heads are nodding.
Nod, nod, nod.
Nod your head my darling.

Once I caught a fish alive.
Six, seven, eight, nine, ten
(hold up additional fingers)
Then I let it go again.
Why did I let it go?
Because it bit my finger so.
Which finger did it bite?
The little finger on the right.
(hold up pinky on the right hand)

Monkeys on the Bed
Five little monkeys jumping on the bed
(child jumping on the bed or couch)
One fell off and bumped his head
(throw child down on the bed and rub his/her head)
Mama called the doctor and doctor said,
(pretend talking on the phone)
No more monkeys jumping on the bed.
(shake index finger)

Five Little Fishes
Five little fishes swimming in a pool. (wiggle five fingers, move arm)
The first fish said, "This pool is cool!" (shiver and hug yourself)
The second fish said, "This pool is deep." (use a low voice)
The third fish said, "I want to sleep." (yawn and stretch)
The fourth fish said, "I spy a ship." (hand shading eyes)
Fishing boat comes, line goes kersplash! (throw in line)
Away the five little fishies dash. (fingers "swim" away quickly)

Two little feet go tap, tap, tap,
Two little hands go thump, thump, thump (fists against floor)
Two little feet go jump, jump, jump,
One little body turns all the way around,
One little child sits quietly down.
